How to accept ACH payments for wholesale orders

Card fees add up fast on large wholesale invoices, so many B2B buyers would rather pay by bank transfer. If your store is based in the United States, you can accept ACH bank payments on Wholesale Payments invoices through Stripe. This guide explains how to turn it on and what to expect.

Before you start

  • Wholesale Payments connected to a Stripe account. How to set up Stripe for wholesale payments
  • A United States Stripe account. ACH is a US bank network, so Stripe only offers it to US-based businesses. Customers outside the US pay by card.

How ACH works with Wholesale Payments

Wholesale Payments doesn’t set payment methods itself. It uses whatever methods you’ve enabled for invoices in your Stripe account, so you turn ACH on in Stripe and it then becomes available on your wholesale invoices. There’s no separate ACH switch in the plugin.

Enable ACH in your Stripe Dashboard

  1. Sign in to your Stripe Dashboard.
  2. Turn on ACH direct debit for invoices. Stripe controls this screen and moves it from time to time, so follow Stripe’s guide to payment methods for invoices rather than a path we might quote out of date.
  3. Save your changes in Stripe.

Stripe holds the screenshots and the current steps for this, in payment methods for invoices and ACH direct debit. We do not mirror them here, because Stripe changes that interface on its own schedule.

Once ACH is on in Stripe, your next wholesale invoices will offer bank payment alongside card. Stripe handles the bank verification and collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can non-US stores accept ACH?
No. This is a Stripe restriction, not ours: ACH is a US bank network, so Stripe only offers it on US-based accounts. Customers elsewhere pay by card.

Why don’t I see an ACH setting in Wholesale Payments?
There isn’t one. Wholesale Payments uses your Stripe account’s invoice payment methods, so you enable ACH in Stripe and it carries over automatically.

Is ACH slower than card?
Bank payments take longer to clear than cards. Stripe confirms the payment once the transfer settles, and your invoice updates then.
