Running a WooCommerce store for both retail and wholesale customers means both groups draw from the same inventory pool. By default, WooCommerce reduces your product stock count each time an order is processed, regardless of whether the buyer is a retail or wholesale customer. For stores handling large wholesale volumes, those deductions can quickly affect the stock available to your regular customers.
WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium includes a Prevent Stock Reduction setting that tells WooCommerce to skip the stock decrement step for any order placed by a wholesale customer.
Requirements
- WooCommerce installed and active.
- WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium installed and activated. This feature is not available in the free WooCommerce Wholesale Prices plugin.
Enabling Prevent Stock Reduction
- Go to Wholesale → Settings → Wholesale Prices → General.
- Scroll to the Wholesale Products section.
- Check the Prevent Stock Reduction checkbox.
- Click Save changes.

How it works
Once the setting is saved, WooCommerce skips the stock decrement step whenever an order is placed by a logged-in customer with a wholesale role. The product’s stock count stays at its current level after the wholesale order is processed.
Because wholesale orders no longer reduce stock, the stock levels shown in WooCommerce reflect only retail consumption and manual adjustments, not wholesale orders that have been fulfilled. Keep this in mind when reading inventory reports or configuring low-stock thresholds.
Troubleshooting
Stock is still being reduced after I enabled the setting
Confirm you clicked Save changes after checking the box. The setting does not take effect until it is saved.
Orders placed from the admin still reduce stock
The setting applies to orders placed by logged-in customers who have a wholesale role. Because administrator and shop manager accounts do not carry a wholesale role, orders placed manually from the WooCommerce admin still trigger a stock reduction. To confirm the setting is working, place a test order while logged in as a customer account with a wholesale role assigned.
The Prevent Stock Reduction option is not visible
This setting is part of WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium. If you do not see it on the General settings page, confirm that the Premium plugin is installed and activated under Plugins → Installed Plugins.
Frequently asked questions
Does this apply to all wholesale roles?
Yes. Prevent Stock Reduction applies to all wholesale roles registered in your store. If you use multiple roles (such as Wholesale Customer, Distributor, or Retailer), orders from any of them are covered by the setting.
Can I apply this to specific wholesale roles only?
No. The setting is a global toggle that covers all wholesale roles. Per-role control is not available through the settings interface.
Can wholesale customers order more units than the stock count shows?
Because stock is not reduced when a wholesale order is placed, WooCommerce’s stock availability check at checkout continues to reference the current stock level. Wholesale customers can keep placing orders without being blocked by a depleted count. This is intentional for stores that track wholesale fulfilment separately from WooCommerce’s stock figures.
Does this affect inventory reports in WooCommerce?
Yes. Because wholesale orders do not reduce stock, WooCommerce’s inventory reports reflect only retail orders and manual adjustments. The reports do not account for wholesale fulfilment. Review your reports with this in mind and adjust any low-stock alert thresholds accordingly.
Does this work with variable products?
Yes. Stock reduction is prevented at the order level, so it applies to all product types that support stock management, including simple products, variable products, and product variations.
Does this work with orders placed through the WooCommerce REST API?
The stock reduction check is based on the authenticated user’s wholesale role at the time the order is processed. If the API request authenticates as a wholesale customer, stock is not reduced. If it authenticates as an administrator account, stock is reduced as normal.
What counts as a wholesale order for this setting?
Any order that is processed while a customer with a registered wholesale role is authenticated. The setting does not evaluate the products in the order, the order total, or any other attribute. It only checks whether the customer placing the order has a wholesale role.
Does this setting interact with WooCommerce’s Hold Stock option?
No. Hold stock is a WooCommerce setting that controls how long a pending order reserves stock before it is released back to the pool. Prevent Stock Reduction only affects the final stock decrement that occurs when an order moves to processing status, not the hold reservation.
