Can I display wholesale prices excluding tax throughout the store?

If you sell wholesale in a country where prices are expected to display excluding tax, or you want your wholesale price displays to differ from how retail prices appear on your site, you may be wondering whether Wholesale Suite lets you control this specifically for your wholesale customers.

WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium includes settings that let you choose whether wholesale prices show including or excluding tax on your shop pages, and separately during cart and checkout. This article covers where to find these settings, what each option does, and how they interact with your store-wide WooCommerce tax settings, tax exemption, and WooCommerce Wholesale Order Form.

This feature is only available in WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium. If you are using the free WooCommerce Wholesale Prices plugin, these options appear in your settings but are disabled and marked as Premium until you upgrade.

Requirements

  • WooCommerce installed and active, with Enable taxes turned on under WooCommerce → Settings → General.
  • WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium installed and activated. This feature is not available in the free WooCommerce Wholesale Prices plugin.
  • At least one wholesale role configured under Wholesale → Roles.
  • WooCommerce Wholesale Order Form installed, if you want your order form pages to follow the same wholesale tax display settings. This is optional.

Set how wholesale prices display on shop pages

The Display Prices in the Shop setting controls whether wholesale prices include or exclude tax on your shop, category, and product pages.

  1. Go to Wholesale → Settings.
  2. Click the Wholesale Prices tab.
  3. Click the Tax tab.
  4. Under Tax Options, find the Display Prices in the Shop setting.
  5. Choose one of the following options, then click Save Changes.
  • –Use woocommerce default–: wholesale prices follow whatever your store’s own Display prices in the shop setting is set to, under WooCommerce → Settings → Tax.
  • Including tax: wholesale prices always display with tax included on shop pages, regardless of your store-wide tax display setting.
  • Excluding tax: wholesale prices always display without tax on shop pages, regardless of your store-wide tax display setting.

Set how wholesale prices display during cart and checkout

A separate setting, Display Prices During Cart and Checkout, controls tax display on the cart and checkout pages. It works the same way as the shop setting above, but applies once a wholesale customer adds a product to their cart.

  1. Go to Wholesale → Settings → Wholesale Prices → Tax.
  2. Under Tax Options, find the Display Prices During Cart and Checkout setting.
  3. Choose –Use woocommerce default–, Including tax, or Excluding tax.
  4. Click Save Changes.

How these settings interact with tax exemption and your store-wide tax settings

Tax Exemption overrides both display settings

The Tax Exemption setting, found in the same Tax Options section, lets you turn off tax entirely for wholesale roles through the Do not apply tax to all wholesale roles checkbox. When this is enabled, all wholesale prices display excluding tax throughout the store, cart, and checkout, and the Display Prices in the Shop and Display Prices During Cart and Checkout settings are ignored. You can also set tax exemption per wholesale role under Wholesale Role / Tax Exemption Mapping, on the same Tax tab, which overrides the general Tax Exemption checkbox for that role.

Leaving a setting on its default follows your WooCommerce tax settings

When Display Prices in the Shop or Display Prices During Cart and Checkout is left on –Use woocommerce default–, wholesale prices follow whatever your store already uses for Display prices in the shop and Display prices during cart and checkout under WooCommerce → Settings → Tax. Choosing Including tax or Excluding tax overrides the store-wide setting specifically for wholesale roles, without affecting how retail customers see prices.

These settings only take effect when taxes are enabled

Both settings only apply while Enable taxes is turned on under WooCommerce → Settings → General. If tax calculation is disabled for your store, wholesale prices display without tax regardless of what you choose here, since there is no tax being calculated to include or exclude.

Compatibility with Wholesale Order Form

If you use WooCommerce Wholesale Order Form alongside WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium, the order form reads the same Display Prices in the Shop and Display Prices During Cart and Checkout settings. You do not need to configure tax display separately for the order form. Wholesale customers see the same tax treatment on the order form as they do on regular shop and cart pages.

Troubleshooting

I set Display Prices in the Shop to Excluding tax, but wholesale prices still show tax. What should I check?

Confirm that Enable taxes is turned on under WooCommerce → Settings → General. Also check whether Tax Exemption is enabled in the same Tax Options section. When tax exemption is on, wholesale prices always display excluding tax and the Display Prices in the Shop setting has no effect. If neither applies, confirm you are logged in as a user assigned to a wholesale role. This setting only changes tax display for wholesale roles; retail customers and guests continue to see prices according to your store-wide WooCommerce tax settings.

Why does the shop page show a different tax treatment than the cart?

Display Prices in the Shop and Display Prices During Cart and Checkout are two independent settings. Check both under Wholesale → Settings → Wholesale Prices → Tax → Tax Options if you want consistent tax display across your shop and cart pages.

I changed the setting but prices on the shop page have not updated. What should I check?

Clear any page or object cache on your site, including caching plugins and host-level caching, then reload the shop page while logged in as the wholesale customer. Also confirm you clicked Save Changes after changing the setting.

Does this affect administrator or shop manager accounts?

No, unless that account is also assigned a wholesale role. These settings only apply to users with a wholesale role attached to their account, so an administrator or shop manager account without a wholesale role continues to see prices according to your store-wide WooCommerce tax settings.

Frequently asked questions

Does this feature require WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium?

Yes. Both the Display Prices in the Shop and Display Prices During Cart and Checkout settings are part of WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium. The free WooCommerce Wholesale Prices plugin displays these options but marks them Premium, and they have no effect until you upgrade.

Does this change how retail customers or guests see prices?

No. These settings only affect users logged in with a wholesale role. Retail customers and guests continue to see prices according to your store-wide WooCommerce tax settings under WooCommerce → Settings → Tax.

Can I set a different tax display for each wholesale role?

Not for the Display Prices in the Shop and Display Prices During Cart and Checkout settings themselves. These apply to all wholesale roles at once. However, Tax Exemption can be configured per wholesale role under Wholesale Role / Tax Exemption Mapping, which lets you exempt specific roles from tax regardless of the shop and cart display settings.

What does –Use woocommerce default– actually do?

It tells WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium not to override anything. Wholesale prices then display according to whatever your store already uses for Display prices in the shop and Display prices during cart and checkout under WooCommerce → Settings → Tax, the same as they would for a retail customer.

Does this setting change the actual wholesale price, or just how it is displayed?

Only how it is displayed. The underlying wholesale price and any tax calculated on it remain the same. These settings only control whether the tax amount is shown as included in or excluded from the price shown to wholesale customers.

Do I need to configure anything in Wholesale Order Form separately?

No. WooCommerce Wholesale Order Form reads the same Display Prices in the Shop and Display Prices During Cart and Checkout settings from WooCommerce Wholesale Prices Premium automatically.

What happens if I have not set up any wholesale roles yet?

These settings will not do anything until at least one wholesale role exists and a customer is logged in with that role. Set up your wholesale roles under Wholesale → Roles first.

Can I exempt only some wholesale roles from tax instead of all of them?

Yes. Use Wholesale Role / Tax Exemption Mapping, on the same Tax tab, to set tax exemption per wholesale role. This overrides the general Tax Exemption checkbox for the roles you map.
